Fern vine, split to a millimetre and woven wet. A royal craft.
Yan lipao is a southern fern vine, split into strands about a millimetre wide and woven damp so it tightens as it dries. The technique was nearly lost and was revived under royal patronage in the 1970s.
A small basket takes weeks. This is the most expensive object in the collection by weight and the one most likely to be handed down.

Twelve coats of resin over bamboo, polished between each one.

Weighted brass, one hole. Does the job and nothing else.

Hand-rolled. Forty sticks, about forty-five minutes each.

Backstrap-loomed by Karen weavers in Mae Hong Son.
